Well Child Care

From birth through young adulthood, health maintenance visits are critical for ensuring your child is healthy both physically, emotionally, and developmentally.  Fairhaven Pediatrics follows the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended universal screening tools at each well child appointment. If there are delays in a child’s growth or development, they can be caught and treated early, ensuring your child has the best possible outcome.  Well child care also ensures your child will receive preventative care including vaccinations and age appropriate counseling and guidance for both the parent and the child.

Sick Visits

In the event of an illness or injury, we are here for your child.  Whether it be cold or flu symptoms, falls or lacerations, we prioritize having same day appointment availability for sick visits.  We also have evening hours on Tuesdays, and for our optional membership subscribers we offer after hours for urgent matters.  We want to be your first call when your child is ill or injured, unless your child is experiencing a medical emergency and in this case should be taken to the nearest emergency center.

Prenatal Visits

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all expecting parents visit a pediatrician during the third trimester.  This allows you to get to know your child’s medical family, and answer any concerns or questions you might have.  It also serves as an opportunity to understand our policies and the services we provide.  Our staff has a great relationship with the OBGYNs, newborn hospitalists and birthing centers in the area and will work to support you and your family.  Being a parent is not easy, and we are here to provide you with the tools and information you need as you prepare for your new baby’s arrival.

Chronic Care

From asthma to long standing abdominal pain, chronic medical problems occur in children. These symptoms and illnesses can be extremely stressful for both the patient and their family. We are here to help navigate these problems and address a wide range of concerns you may have regarding your child’s symptoms or diagnosis.  Together we’ll work towards management or, when possible, resolution of the condition.  For children with complex medical needs, we will work alongside your child’s specialists to ensure your child is receiving effective and timely care to the best of our ability.

Mental Health and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

1 in 5 children experience mental health issues, but only 20% receive the comprehensive treatment they need.  Anxiety and depression are the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders in children, but they can present differently than they would in adults.  We are well trained in the evaluation and treatment of common mental health conditions.  We also follow the AAP guidelines of universal screening, even at a young age, so we can detect signs and symptoms needing further investigation early before the condition worsens.  Our physician has training in psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy, which is an effective treatment for many common mental health disorders affecting children.  Should a referral be needed for more complicated cases, our office has an excellent relationship with child therapists and psychiatrists, and will partner with them to care for your child.

Learning and attention disorders have affected approximately 20% of children, but this has understandably risen since the pandemic.  Monitoring for signs that a child is struggling academically is extremely important, and we work with your child’s school to ensure these children are receiving accommodations to help them thrive just like their peers.  There are multiple medical and non medical supports for neurodevelopment disorders, and we are prepared to offer these services to support your child and family.

Sports and Camp Physicals

These are required by many schools and summer camps to ensure your child’s healthy participation in athletics.  Specialized but not time consuming, these physicals include a focused history and physical, and are usually required yearly by schools, camps, and youth sport organizations.
